Looking for a Mac mini 2,1 dvd drive

    Hi all,

I've been given a Mac mini to see if it can be salvaged. The system has a number of issues.

The dvd drive is kaput and apparently hasn't worked for years.
It's not possible to boot from external media via USB.
The installed system is 10.6.5 but it can't be updated to 10.6.8. Attempting to install any software updates gives a stupid an error occurred message.

All file permissions appear to be okay. I've taken the hard drive out and checked it using another Mac.

I thought I might be able to use the optical drive from a Macbook Pro in the system but of course Apple used a proprietary connector in the Mac mini to prevent individuals from upgrading the systems to two internal hard drives.

I'm hoping to beg, borrow or steal an optical drive in an effort to install a clean system on the computer after which the item would be returned.

By any chance would some kind soul have one of these old Mac minis lying about that I could borrow for an afternoon?

Are you sure you can't boot from USB? Tried holding down C as you reboot?

    Yes I'm sure.

I've removed the internal drive and connected the drive from my Macbook Pro in an external enclosure. The Snow Leopard disc doesn't boot nor have I been able to boot a Linux disc or install Windows. My thinking is that Apple crippled the ability of the old Mac mini to boot via external optical devices.
