Do I need to fill out a security form of some sort in order to travel to the US for a holiday?

you need to complete an ESTA...

Assuming you are traveling on a passport from a visa wavier country you need a ESTA. No ESTA, you won't be able to even check in. You must have evidence of an onward or return ticket. As of this week the number of questions on the ESTA has increased

Otherwise you need to apply for a visa

And CBP customs declaration must be completed on day of travel at the port of entry

And bringing a pen can make this a lot easier, as they've a habit of not providing any.

Some rather detailed questions as well.

    - Employer Details.
    - Parent Details.
    - Emergency Contact Details.

While no issue with no. 3 the other two and particularly the first one do seem to be a big brother exercise in intel gathering. While I do love going to the USA I feel that is a lot of detailed info to be handing over.

Don't you have to fill out something ahead of time online before travelling. Seem to remember having to do this last year as well as filling out the card at the airport.

None of the above are as galling as being made provide fingerprints! That's the biggest sticking point for me

What's the API (advanced passanger information)? Got an email from aerlingus stating I have to fill this in before I fly, I've a valid esta until Nov next year.

You'll find it under Manage Booking on the EI website. Needs passport number and address of where you'll be staying.
