Combine Golf and Rugby World Cup in Cardiff

Ireland play France in Cardiff on 11th Oct 2015. There are about 8 of us thinking of extending the weekend to include a couple of rounds of golf. Staying in Cardiff or Celtic Manor is prohibitively expensive.
Anyone got any other suggestions as to where to stay and play in South Wales or even West Country?

Not sure about accommodation. A friend of mine has rooms booked in Newport so I can stay with him if I end up going. Last time I went to Cardiff we stayed in a B & B in Penarth which was only a 10 minute taxi ride into the city from there. As for the golf, i would play Royal Porthcawl. I haven't actually played there but know a few lads that have done the same as you by combining the rugby trip with a game of golf and they rave about the course there.

Celtic Manor is basically in Newport. Stayed in a holiday inn Newport there before, it's just across the road from Celtic Manor and was pretty cheap... and it was a Rugby weekend

Llanwern Golf club at bottom right of map... couldn't tell you what it's like though

Anyone been to Vale of Glamorgan? Anyone played either of their courses? Wales National or Lakes?

I was bandying with this idea too.

But it didn't add up for me. The rugby means a solid day on the booze and a solid day feeling sorry for yourself the next day.

Once I worked out there's no easy way from Holyhead to Cardiff, meaning flights and carriage are involved, it all pointed to going to Spain again instead.

I would rather stay at home and watch it on tv than stay in Newport....not my cup of tea at all, that place:eek:

Vale of Glamorgan are OK courses but I dont think either are up there with the better courses in the area. The National is a hell of a long course if of back sticks

Depends where your staying but Rolls of Monmouth and St Pierre are really good parkland courses.
Links courses my pick would obviously be Porthcawl, but Pyle and Kenfig just down the road is a class track as is Southerndown which is a bit more links/heathland

I've done it a few times and the only sensible way is to go the A55 when you leave Holyhead, this turns into the M56 @Chester, follow that to Warrington, then down the M6 to Birmingham and then M5 till that intersects with the M4 just north of Bristol, then straight into Newport / Cardiff.

If you go down over the A5 and the valleys, it is a beautiful drive and a full 100 miles shorter. Yep, it's shorter, but it takes a hell of a lot longer. It's a 4 hour spin on the motorways, but could be as much as 6 down the A5.

Newport is not to far from Cardiff. It's not ideal, but it can be done and no problem getting taxis. I think it was about half an hour away from Cardiff city centre.

Yip, I've done that drive and never again. Left Holyhead at around 11am and arrived in Cardiff around 6pm. Luckily enough I returned on the Swansea - Cork ferry so I didn't have to face that drive again in the opposite direction.

I travel Rosslare to Fishguard and on to Cardiff, quite a bit. I would recommend it over any drive from Holyhead. It is way easier as you're on big, straight roads.

As for golf, Royal Porthcawl is top of the heap by some margin - I reviewed it on my blog a while back, and you'll find photographs of
    Royal Porthcawl
    Rolls of Monmouth
    St. Pierre x 2
    Pyle & Kenfig
    Celtic Manor x 2

on my Flickr Page They're all listed under 'Wales'

The ferry the day after a rugby international can be a sight to behold! Might fly. I've now got a hotel in Cardiff for OK money.

I'd love to play Portcawl, home of the GB&I Walker Cup win in '91. Interestingly they have accommodation that can sleep up to 12 people. £50 pppn.

Our problem is that we will want to play on Saturday and I can see that been blocked by members time. I'll definitely have a look at the others.

Yes, Royal Porthcawl may be a problem on a Saturday, as will Rolls of Monmouth and P&K. You shouldn't have any trouble getting out on one or other of the three Celtic Manor courses on a Saturday. You'll just need to book soon! The 2010 course is big and long and a bit featureless in places. I'd recommend the Montgomerie.

GB&I Walker Cup '91. Gary Wolstenholme beat Tiger Woods on the 18th in the singles. Probably the shortest hitter of the two teams playing against the longest... that's the beauty of links golf!

I heard him on Sky during the week (I think he's going to the senior tour soon) and he said he was at a minimum 5 clubs different to Tiger hitting to the green, often more.

    Tx for feedback Kevin
