Upgrading Old Laptop

    Hi All

I have a laptop which is about 2-3 years old now and wondering if there is a point upgrading it?

Use it quiet a bit for excel, watching movies etc.

I have all the fancy graphics turned off windows, no start up items, it's not too bad then.

Wondering if should invest 100 euro and get an extra 4gb ram/ssd.

Or just sell it and get a new one for 400 euro?

    Specs below

    Intel Celeron Dual-Core B820
    2GB RAM
    500GB HD
    WIN 7

Sell it and get a new one, weak processor is the problem.

Yeah the cpu is the pretty crap.

If it was a core i3 or even a pentium m it would give me some options.

What would I get for it 100 - 150 euro?

It's not a great CPU but it's alright. Should be no problem for general use like what you've described. An SSD would make a huge difference, more ram possibly.

If it had a decent screen resolution (over 720pixels high) it might be worth keeping for word etc as low priced laptops now seem to have resolutions so low as to be really anoying with the large ribbon ui in office.

    - depends on what you want it for if its worth upgrading- but a decent ssd drive you could always move to a new laptop when you do upgrade.

    “Roll it back”

I just want it to be snappy and responsive.

Do a good bit of excel in bed, conditional formatting, v look up etc, comparing stuff basically. It can be very slow when sorting and that, freezes a good bit.

Would an ssd help there or is processing power.

Other uses is for watching movies, connecting it to hdtv and using xmbc, bluestacks, popcorn time and the like on it.

Anyone recommend a good ssd for it?

I am not sure if the motherboard supports usb3.0 and newer features though.

Its a grand laptop really. CPU benchmark has the processor as okay (1400). Has it always been slow? More than likely its a problem with heat on the cpu. Usually causes laptop processors to hit 100% usage. Fans might be covered in dust. Download coretemp and report back.

Also what antivirus are you using? Some can be resource hungry.

Whats your ram and cpu usage when idle? ctrl+alt+delete and select task manager.
