healthy school ideas?

Hi, I have been given the task of finding new ideas to promote healthy school plans in our local school. I'm calling all members of school staff here who may have opinions based on their school to advise on anything.

This can involve recreation and yard activities, promoting anti bullying, healthy eating policy, promoting self-esteem, green schools etc. Many areas have been covered but looking for new exciting ways to promote these?

I am currently focusing on outdoors in relation to a vegetable patch, seating area and new activities or play area (for when the weather improves). I have ideas for some of the above but any further ideas would be much appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!!:)

First thing would be to realise that out don't need good weather to be outdoors. With proper clothing there are very few days that the weather is so extreme children can't get a bit of fresh air.

Next encourage walking or cycling to school. If the distances are too far arrange a 'no traffic' zone so that they have to walk at least a few hundred yards. It amuses and saddens me to see a green flag flying outside a school and dozens of cars parked idling at the gate.

Has your school an "Active Flag?" We got ours last year. We did all kinds of activities throughout the year, parents taught zumba and yoga. Other parents loaned us rowing machines. We did "Drop Everything and Dance" whereby music was played over the intercom st random times and everyone got up and did the "Saturday Night" dance moves.

As to the veggie patch, what are you hoping to grow?

I like the Active flag idea. I will def mention this in the meetings. We already had a request sheet sent around for different ideas and some mentioned yoga so I will look into that with parents and other activities.

We already started up a small veg patch which involved growing cabbage, potatoes, corn and more and we gave it out to the local care homes in the area once picked. We were thinking of expanding this by including signs and information on anything planted. It seems to be going well so far, obviously we do this in Spring so they have a chance to grow.

I picked up some of the smaller sized wooden spools (used for electrical wires) which can be used for tables and are very sturdy so just need to find seats for them, maybe tyres or wooden stumps!

    Thanks for the advice guys!!:D

We have a "well done wall" where any children who win medals etc in dancing competitions or sports have their picture taken along with their prize. This covers in school and outside activities. The pictures are then displayed in the corridor for all to see. Children love it.

another good tip, thanks will keep that in mind! We have some dancers in our school. I also want to try and put the not so confident and talented and try to push them into discovering their gifts. We do a merit system but the same ones seem to get the merits. A girl who really needs a good push as she tends to drift and fall behind could benefit here but its so hard to reward her. I might encourage her art or reward her for trying hard (difficult but not impossible)! This might lift her spirits!!;)
    Thanks again.
