R I P. Very sad news indeed. Himself and John Bowman were always compelling and highly interesting presenters. Very sad news

Would put him up there with Colm Murray as one of the best spoken broadcasters RTÉ ever employed.

Great broadcaster and writer. Always great at election time, analysing results and keeping the studio coverage interesting.

    Condolences to his family.

If you grew up watching news or current affairs he was a familiar and welcome voice. Certainly a contrast to today's broadcast news media cycle driven by breaking news and the egos of presenters.

I remember him best for Today Tonight.
My parents used to watch that regularly, and I used to love the theme music, and as I grew older I grew to admire and enjoy listening to him.

I remember Brian Farrell on 7 Days, which was for many years the main current affairs programme on RTE, as well as the specials and Today Tonight already mentioned.

Brian Farrell was the template for how such programs should be conducted. He will be sorely missed by all of us who remember him in action. He was courteous, analytical, extremely knowledgeable but persistent with guests. I don't think any current affairs presenter has really fully emanated his style, although some are very good.

Contrast his style with some newsreaders on the radio who cannot pronounce some place names or peoples' names correctly.

A great broadcaster, I loved his voice, and his courtesy to his guests, at all times, even as he was going in with the hard questions, on the current affairs programmes.
I used to enjoy the election results coverage, even as a youngster. He brought a real sense of gravitas, but also seemed to enjoy them, himself.

    May he rest in peace.

    RIP Brian Farrell.

Great Broadcaster - It brings back memories of black and white television at Election times and "sush" moments from my younger days.

    Nobody did it better.

My only time I would watch Brian Farrell would be on the older editions of Prime Time.

He was a broadcaster of great personal warmth and enthusiasm to his viewers and his guests.

Ireland's Jeremy Paxman, although a lot more courteous. Perhaps a fairer comparison would be the BBC's legendary Robin Day, and not just because of the similar taste in bow ties.

But then, only us old timers remember Day....

Farrell was a superb interviewer. Persistent and pointed and able to ask the correct question. Which is not the same as talking over a guest, interrupting constantly and throwing in an impertinent non sequitur while they're at least trying to answer a previous question.

    (Take note Mr Tubridy)
