I just saw an advertisement for Electric Ireland's Chimney Balloon - and it says they come in different sizes - how would you find out which size you need?  And is there someone who can install it?

    Hi FunnyPauline,

    Thanks for your post.

We do have chimney balloons available at our online store in a number of different sizes, but we don't provide installation.

There's some very good advice on ChimneyBalloon.ie about how to figure out which size chimney balloon you need:
Chimney Balloons are made for two different types of chimney - unlined flues (the older type) and lined flues (the newer type). First, find out if your chimney has a lined flue or not. A simple rule of thumb is that most houses built after the mid 1960s will have a lined flue. Most houses before the mid 1960s will not. Changes in the building regulations meant that lined flues became the norm.

Knowing which type of chimney you have will help you select the correct type of Chimney Balloon. If you are unsure, click here for more information on the different types of flue.

For unlined flues, balloons are rectangular in shape and come in three different sizes:
    • small
    • medium
    • large

For lined flues, balloons are more rounded in shape and come in two sizes:
    • small
    • medium

Most new houses in Ireland have a 200mm (8") lined flue - the 9" Chimney Balloon is a perfect fit!

If your house is a larger modern house, the 12" Chimney Balloon will be the best fit.

If you're not sure, with such a variety of chimneys and constructions, it's best to check. So how do you measure your chimney flue?
    • A flexible steel measuring tape is best for measuring your chimney.
    • Measure your chimney about a foot or so up the chimney flue.
    • Check the side-to-side measurement
    • Check the front-to-back measurement
    • Remember that the measurements need only be approximate!
    • Choose the Chimney Balloon that is slightly larger than your chimney.

Hope the above helps. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.

    Regards,
    David

Who are the Irish distributor for the manufacturer - www.chimneyballoon.com in the UK.

Where interestingly they are also a lot cheaper (€24 against your €31.99) .... with a shipping cost of €3.40, over half of Electric Ireland's €7.50.

Thanks for the pointer. Electric Ireland's online store prices are way too expensive. You may need to address that...
