Hi , Im hoping someone can help me.
we are changing already varnished doors and skirting to white and the wood has lots of dark knotts in it, going on advise from a hardware shop we were told to use an undercoat primer (2 Coats) and then colour . Nothing about the knotts :(

we have given all doors and skirting a light sanding and applied 2 coats of the undercoat primer (water based) and not im afraid to go any further as lots of people now telling me you need to treat the knotts before anything as they will only seep through in a few months . Is there anything I can use at this stage or will I have to sand down everything and start again - please help

It may be a case that the advice was given based on the wood is very old and the knots are inactive, or the varnish will have sealed the knots.

However, it is always recommended to seal the knots with a knotting solution or using a Shellac based primer. The primer is the best bet as it seals and primes over varnish no problem. Use BIN Primer or Johnstone's QD Primer Sealer. Both very good and available in most places. U can paint over them with any finish you like

We have had that problem in the past and just applied shellac before painting and its worked perfectly. We used this one Zinnser shellac

I'd be very surprised if the varnish has not done a sealing job at this point. Personally, I'd fire ahead but if you are anyway doubtful. just go win the zinsser as previously suggested
