So apart from the horrendous price. Is the any reasons not to purchase one for the house for Christmas?

    No.

I'd worry about the base machine and its performance. In the same way I didn't touch the launch Retina Macbooks, I'd be wary of these as well. Personally I'd wait to the second gen.

The one in work is absolutely stunning. Has made all the other iMac's or thunderbolt displays look like a $99 android tablet screen.

That's why I don't even want to see the new one.

It's true. It makes everything around it look like junk.

For 5k it had better take the junk also to the dump!

Saw one on display today in Liffey Valley and it sure is a thing of beauty. As the sales assistant pointed out, after selecting Launchpad, you can actually read the writing on the new icon for the Pages app - the picture is that sharp!

5K ain't a reference to the price, just so you know.

Genuine question as I had a go of the demo machine in compub, but for a home user are there really benefits to this screen?

Now don't get me wrong, I love the sharpness of my 1080p phone, I love the sharpness of 1080p tv watching blurays, I have got a gaming pc so can only use the PS3 as a reference, but what benefit is the 4k screen with only photo editing the only content I personally know of to make use of the real estate?

High res video editing would make use of it. And multitasking, being able to pin so many windows on the screen, which are all readable.

Ill upgrade to a 4k monitor down the line, or the ultrawide equivalent, but not until a single graphics card (<€400) can drive them at a decent rate!

To be fair a 5K display of any for would be very expensive. I don't think the new iMac is crazy money for what you're getting based on other 5K prices. Probably makes more sense than a Mac Pro for a lot of people.

Dell 5K monitor $2500 http://www.anandtech.com/show/8496/dell-previews-27inch-5k-ultrasharp-monitor-5120x2880 and not out until Christmas.

    Apple iMac 5K $2499 http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac-retina

So not including sales tax, you're getting an i5 CPU computer for $1 less.

Do you have to remove the screen. Or is access to the RAM and SSD now at the back?

Remove the screen for access to SSD. Ram at the back.

I was brave enough to upgrade SSD on my Pro, but I doubt I have the ability or guts to take that big screen off and hope I get it back on!! Fair play to ya.
