Two that always pleased me and very different in nature

The first is by Todd Rundgren - For the Want of a Nail from Nearly Human (1989)

and the second is by Deep Purple - Highway Star live on Made in Japan. Perfect live hard rock.

A subject close to my heart. Ive had plenty of discussions and what make a good opening track for me is one that makes you want to listen to the rest of the album rather than the song again. Seven nation army is a good example, a great song that you want to listen to again even though it is followed by the brilliant Black Math.

The stand out ones to me are:

Oasis - Hello - even after all those years that the shine has worn off Whats the Story this is still a track that gets me going (along with Some might say), especially after the release of Whatever which would have been a fantastic opening track.

Unkle - Guns Blazing - long inrto, loud, agressive and rocking.

Grand national - Talk amongst yourself (Sasha remix) on the involver album - my favorite opening track, I love everything about it - the sound level, the pace, the tone it sets for the rest of the album, that the original isnt actually that good a song.

Tom Sawyer from Moving Pictures by Rush, just wow. Mind you, Subdivisions from Signals is fairly impressive (also by Rush).

Beck - Looser (also Golden age on the Sea Change ablum is good)
LCD Soundsystem - dance yourself clean. Not a big fan of them but this song is great.
Eminem - Kill you. Great opening track to the difficult second album

Talking Heads "Thank you for sending me an Angel" from More Songs about Buildings and Food. Kicks the album off at a serious gallop (could also suggest "I Zimbra" off the following album):
