    Feel a bit silly asking this ad feel as I should know it already, but what's is the difference between the two and when is one needed more than the other? Ie is one for making an animal grow and the other then for putting on flesh?

    Simply, protein is what muscles are made of.
    Energy is needed to use protein...and to move about

    Protein is for growing an animal. High energy diet would be used to finish.

    not necessarily low energy, depends on the quality of your forage, energy is important in young stock for bone formation and frame development where as the P content pushes growth

    usually on grass a weanling ration would be 14 to 16 % P where as on poorer quality silage might be 16 to 18 % P

    finishing stock on the other hand might be on a 12% P

    fibre and minerals are also important

    It's not a case of one OR the other, all animals will need both.

    Where top stock men succeed is knowing what quantities of each the animal needs at each stage.

    Feeding excess protein when it's not needed is expensive and animals don't store it, it's simply passed out in urine.

    Finishing bullocks here now on 11% protein.

    Coarse ration of a merchant, maize barley hulls etc, not quite sure of energy content, start them at 11% when finishing, you don't really want them to grow anymore, you want them to fatten

    Not well up on the finishing end of things here. Any good books ect to look out for to learn more?

    Say I'm trying to finish bulls under 16 months. Born in janery. They go out to good grass and get one kg of barly a day from 6 months old. Where would you go from there assuming they go into the shed around November and don't go back out?

    All fatting stock here fed 11% for around last 3 months rarely feed heavy for any longer
    Except u16 bulls they get round 14 as I would hope them to be growing as well with them

    All rations mixed by miller

    Yea 11% would be sufficient throughout finishing

    Dairy farm here and work of following
    Calves/weanlibgs 18/20%p hi energy ration/nut
    Cows overall diet 16/17% p and always hi energy .nut must contain barley and maize as main ingridents.
    Protein critical for frame growth for young stock,finishing stock require energy and p of 10 /12%
