Hi! Was cycling through the huge puddles in town today & got a blowout of rear tyre; i presume from a big piece of glass..
There is a 1.5cm gash right through the tyre: can i repair this?

    Thank you!

Say hello to the bin as you escort the tyre there.

You lost a road tyre but gained a turbo tyre. :)

    Thanks for the replies...
Mental note: i'm not cycling after such heavy rain.. I couldnt avoid those huge puddles so hitting glass was a bigger risk.

So if i get a turbo trainer i can use it...

So much crap in the roads this time of year!!

If you've had the tyre for a while it's not so bad. It's a real sickener when it happens to a new tyre.

I've had them a few months now: they got me across thr Pyrenees in August!

I wouldn't even use it on the turbo, bin it completely.

Really? What's the worst that can realistically happen? I'd use it on a turbo, it's only a few months old, loads of rubber left.

With a cut that big you will simply burst another tube after a short spell. If €5 ish a spin doesn't bother you fair enough ;)

If you use an old tube too, you're good to go surely?

I've used worse on the turbo as well as on the trails.
On the inside of the tyre put a large patch over the hole as you would patch a tube.
Use an old tube if you have one handy as said above.
When all is assembled inflate the tube till it is hardish then take some Gorilla Tape and wrap it tightly 'round the section of the damaged trye and across the rim a couple of times and then finish inflating the tyre.
It's bit of a MacGuyver get you home bodge but it's perfectly fine for the trainer unless you are a fussy twat about such things.

Any bike shop should give you a solid old tyre for the turbo

On a side note you can also bodge a bigger gash on a tyre (mtb one anyway) by cutting up a bidon and using it to line the inside of the gash helped along with tape if ya have it. Held for the 2 hours last I had to do it.

Before you bin it cut a 3 inch piece off it and put it in your saddle pack to use as am emergency tyre patch the next time you have a blow out.
