Friend of mine looking for a course recommendation near Killarney.

They like their golf - but can't see them pay the big money that seems to be required for the big courses there.

Any other good courses in the more reasonable price range ?

    Thanks.

Best course value wise is Lackabane (one of Killarney GC courses) they have opens for €25 incl lunch on Saturdays, cheap for rest of week as well.

Beaufort and Killorglin are ok courses and cheap.

Dooks Links really good and best value links in South West, still not cheap though.

Thanks - if it was myself it would be dooks etc.

Was thinking Beaufort - but will look up Lackabane now.

They only re opened it recently after a couple of years closed so it is still a little rough around the edges but its a great course, better than Mahonys Point I think.

Killorglin is a good shout, is very reasonable (25 euro I think). The fairways are very good for this time of year.

And lads - of the cheaper options mentioned - what would be the best course ?

Beaufort every time. Or try Ceann Sibeal an hour or so west

Greens are really good Lackabane at the moment and the course isn't soaked.

Beaufort is a fine track during the summer, best avoided from this time of year untill next spring.
Ceann Sibeal is a good hour and a half from Killarney.

Lackabane greens leave a bit to be desired (undestandable given it was closed for 3 or 4years), no doubt they'll get them right early next spring but saying that of the three Killarney GC courses, it's the weakest IMO.

Dooks is also a good track, but check with the pro shop first, the fairways are usually closed from November to March, so you'll have to play off mats or drop to the side of the fairway and pay €40 for the pleasure.
Waterville on the other hand has the course in full play throughout the winter and at €60 is a bargin for the best course in Kerry IMO.

Ya the weakest of the 3 for sure. The greens don't look great but the ball is rolling a lot better than it is on Mahoneys right now and they are also faster tbh. Also the OP is looking for a cheap option and for the money Lackabane is great value (€10 with a member, €25 with lunch on a Saturday).

Played Waterville at the weekend and it is in great shape, as expected but prob too expensive for the original poster's mate.

Yes agreed it's cheap and cheerfull and the open on Saturdays represents good value, do you know is that open still running and is it planned to run over the winter?

    Thanks lads -

    Will forward all options.

Again - a different story if I was going , and will hit there at some stage.

Have never played golf in Kerry - so one on the list. But, sounds like it will take a few trips. Love Kerry for a holiday.
