It's the only job. I've seen stuff done by Galco in Dublin. Excellent job.

what axles are you using? the way regulations are heading re. braking systems, the day of the trailer with hydraulic brakes could be drawing to a close.Good on you for doing, though.

I've just got a ror axle with 19.5 tyres on it got it from felix gormely in crossdoney a lovely man to deal with!!

How did a Kerry man end up getting an axle from Felix? :D

Gas man, if you ever get him talking about his days selling Ford tractors to farmers back in the 1950's. Often he had to train the older lads how to drive as part of the deal.

You have to be careful that you drill it correctly or they'll do it for ya and it won't be pretty!

He did and the ingots I'd say he shows everyone the smelter a polish lad working there opened everything to show us it working when he arrived in the shed without being told I'd say everyone sees that local lad here crushes cars the odd time crushes them whole nothing taken off or stripped

I'm worried about the channel iron will I have to drill the side of it as when they dip it it will fill with zinc if you know what I mean?

I'd be interested to hear how much this costs as have a trailer l was considering doing also. Cow **** is fierce severe on iron. There's a few crowds galvanising tractor drawn cattle trailers now.

I don't do that type of work myself, but I do see lads in one part of my job doing it. I see they drill in the corners of angle iron, so I'd be confident channel would need to be drilled too. Maybe even in each corner?

The BIL got a trailer done and told me it was €80. I think it was a smallish 8'X4' type.

would you not consider getting it sand blasted ? If sprayed with correct paint afterwards it should be a fine job,not saying it will last as long as dipping it though

That's my other option but I like the idea of it lasting for years especially near the sea here

A fella brought me tractor panels off a 99 case last week,i couldn't believe how bad they were. When he said he bought it 'back around dingle' it all made sense.

The salt air destroys everything here a neighbour has an 08 john deere the loader is fairly rusty as we'll as the grill then again he doesn't put it in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭135man

Would the galvanise wear off the floor after a while I wonder

No not if it's a timber floor

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 132 ✭✭135man

Have a neighbour here with a timber floor in his he gets fierce worried when it gets wet, I'll be putting 4mil plate on mine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,173 ✭✭✭✭Muckit

Only joking :) Ya the steel floor would be a better job. So will the cross members be all steel also? Sounds good.

Is 4mm excessive or you want to make it bullet proof?

The drilling is only for hollow section. Serves a couple of purposes. The most important bit being that it prevents the pipe from exploding due to the heat of dipping causing air inside to expand.

Then it's also to allow free movement of the chemicals in the cleaning process and the galv. You need holes in top and bottom so that the chemicals can get in at the bottom and at the same time the air can get out at the top, then when lifting out so that air can get in and the excess galv run out.

The only reason I could think of that would mean angle or channel would need holes is if it's postioned in such a way that when its dipped it would fill with galv and not have anywhere for it to get out... Or else if they need to put holes in it to hang it up on the dipping racks if theirs no other easy way

4mm wouldn't be excessive for a general tipping trailer, atleast you wouldn't be worried about the floor ending up bowed if your trying to pack a bit more in with the loader!

No need to apologise yeah it's a tipper trailer. Has anyone use shannonside galvanisers in Limerick ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,169 ✭✭✭enricoh

if you make up the full trailer, ie sides on etc the sides will go into a hoop with the heat n u'll never straighten them out right.
u could use galvaroid? paint, a neighbour of mine made his gates 10-15 years ago, 2 coats galvaroid n two black n not a bit of rust on em

    135man

Would you be willing to share details of your build - design, steel used etc?

We have a weeks trailer with a good chassis and ram but body is red rotten so it would be great to build a body and bolt it on.
