No harm in noting the number on a PostIt stuck in your passport. The likelihood of needing it though, is between miniscule and zero.

It says on the ESTA FAQ that you do not need to print it. The agent will retrieve it using your passport number. There is no conceivable situation where you'd need a printout - if the agent can't find your approval on the system, waving a piece of paper at him/her will get you nowhere.
