I have a situation whereby When joining a company my mobile phone number Was added to the bill pay contract the job had with O2. When my employment ended the employer stated my phone number was the company's and the only way I could use it was to pay out the remainder of the contract myself, I think he is just being obstructive. O2 won't talk to me as My name is not on the contract. Can anyone Clarify the situation here, surely this happens all the time, ppl move jobs but do not loose their mobile phone numbers. Can anyone suggest the best way, going forward. If I join a new job am I better off taking out my own contracts?, what is the norm.

Your employer owns the phone number not you, you don't have a leg to stand on. The number is probably in a contract, the employer doesn't have to buy out that contract because you are leaving.

Normally you should have a personal number you use yourself, and keep the work phone separate. If you choose to only keep one phone and to use your work phone for personal use expect to loose it when you leave.

Read the post again, the OP owned the number and it was added to the employer's contract.... sorry I don't know the answer myself.

I misread that, in that case I think the ownership has been transferred to the company. Whoever's name is on the contract owns the number.

It would have been given as an option to you when you started if I am correct that you could either keep your own number or could get a new number.

As mentioned before, if you transferred your own private mobile number to the company and it was now on their bill the number has been removed from your ownership. Unfortunately it is down to the employer of they wish to now release this. Did you have a contract clause about personal phone Vs work phone in your contract.

With your ex-employer's permission, o2 will transfer the remainder of the contract into your name. Hopefully your employer will let you keep any phone you received while working in the company.
