The latest tranche of stats from the CSO includes that 18% of Irish people aged between 16 and 24 have never accessed the internet. Now I know by definition they won't be on here but has anybody met anybody in that age group who has never access the internet?

I've met quite a few people who, if Facebook didn't exist, would never have accessed the internet.

When I was 16, I never accessed the internet. Because I never had it.

    Showing my age.

Id say there are more people in this age bracket that have never been off the internet

An alternative explanation could be that 18% of 16 -24 year olds were too thick to answer a survey properly.

So they have accessed the internet.

    And he's not between 16 and 24
When I was 16, I never accessed the internet.

As I was 16 in 1960 neither had I, but that age group nowadays?

I think the CSO were sitting, open mouthed at a bull's arse before it started to excrete.

So they have accessed the internet.

I'm afraid they have, yes. And the internet would arguably be better without them.

I wonder if that 18% simply don't realise that Facebook is on the internet. I'm half serious...

How many of that 18% have never used the "internet" but have smartphones and use facebook and the like without making the connection, yes some people really are that thick!

What's the odds it was an online survey?

"Hello, can we ask you to fill out our survey on internet use"
"I don't use the internet" *runs away*

    there's your 18% right there

Change "internet" to any other word and its still around 18%

You mean there are people in Ireland then who have also never used porn on the internet?

    Mind blown!

The CSO figures relate to all age groups, it's 5% for the 16-29 group.

that figure sounds plausible, no (optional human) activity will ever get 100%

Yes, the Irish Times stated "While it is easy to assume everyone is plugged into the social networks, some 18 per cent of Irish people aged between 16 and 24 have never accessed the internet." But you are, of course, right. It is 5% per the CSO website. Not like the Times to get something like that wrong.

    Close thread.........

You have to account for people in Donegal and Leitrim.

Most of those areas are just too far from the nearest exchange for a decent DSL to the house and are sparsely populated.

    microwave covers some though.

I'd question if it's a case of they never accessed the internet or just a case of they don't have internet access at home, everwhere in Ireland has internet cafes now a days and every library has internet access. I find it hard to believe that people in that age group would have never accessed the internet, sure most of them are at that age where they would crawl bollox naked over broken glass for some decent porn
