now I never got a copy of my contract when I upgraded. I did so over the phone and they never sent me a copy. Would that not mean that I don't actually have a contract and can just cancel the DD?
I know accountants have to keep documentation for up to 5 years. Is this not the same in law?

Depends on when you upgraded, their may not be a copy of your original contract but their is possibly a recording of you agreeing to terms & conditions and a new minimum subscription period. If your out of your minimum subscription period there's nothing to stop you closing the account/moving provider as long as you're not in arrears.

It may be possible to get a copy of the terms when you upgraded if they were using a standard set of T&C have a look at their website on the way back machine from archive.org, you'll be able to pull up the terms they were using then, you contract would be what was agreed on the phone, which would usually include the T&C.

ETA: This is in no way a legally formed opinion, I just worked in telecoms for years

I signed an 18 month contract in store. I then upgraded for a further 24 months in oct 2013

I have 11 months left on the 24 month contract

Did you sign an upgrade contract or did they just roll over the first one

Rolled over the first one. At least I'm paying the same monthly rate as I was on the first one (had gone up in store)

And you're trying to wiggle your way out of it:). Well, as you've learned in the Bargain Alerts forum , you have 2 chances, slim and.........

I don't doubt what you say but it doesn't make sense to keep contracts for only a year. For starters, they have customers who don't pay their bills. If Meteor only keeps certain contracts for one year, they have no record of those contracts, certain customers could stop paying and Meteor wouldn't know how much was owed.

I wouldn't be happy with this response.

I don't know who is the most appropriate regulatory body, but maybe try Comreg or the Director of Consumer Affairs.
