Job offered subject to funding

I've been verbally offered a research position, which is subject to grant funding being received. I was told it will probably be December before there's any movement, which is fine. There are another couple of opportunities in terms of jobs coming my way, but the first job is the one I really want.

What's the best way to ask about the funding situation, and to find out if they're any closer to securing it? I don't want to seem pushy, but at the same time, I would like to know the reality of the situation. If I'm likely to start in December, then I'll wait, but if it'll be more like March, then I'd like to know so I can make other arrangements. Is there any advantage to telling them that I'm being offered other interviews?

I should say, the job hasn't been formally advertised or anything. I just happened to meet the right person at the right time, so that's why it's all so vague.

Just ask, you are interested in working there so it is understandable to ask.

Yep, maybe try and meet the person you were talking to for a coffee as a follow up, and explain your concerns, and ask what the timeframe is?
