What is the point of Politicians appearing on ETB interview panels? Is it solely to pick up expenses? There was a lively debate the other day regarding this topic in a staff-room.Bad news for the political representatives though! Most people thought they were in it for the money.

I think they are there to be the 'independent' person and lead the interview.

The idea is that the ETB ex vec is locally managed with a local board. The politicians are locally elected and are meant to give a local voice to the management of the ETB. The idea is that the local politician is the voice of the local people. They do now receive training and I have seen them chair the process efficiently. I don't believe its fair to say that expenses are their motivation.

Handy if you know the local politician so and need a teaching job!

Not just ETBs, I was at an interview recently with seven, yes 7, on the panel, and the only one that didn't ask a question was the principal. Just crazy

7!!! the mind boggles, that's just intimidation. You would have to ask them to put their hands up and you'd take their questions one at a time.

By the sounds of things, what probably happened was that a few vested interests wanted to join the interview that the Principal might have being lodging a silent protest by refusing to engage! That, or else it's like the apprentice (or Love/Hate!) where the boss stands back and lets the henchmen do the dirty work while he stares you out to see if you flinch.
