Question: 9 speed rear mech.

    Hi all, I am seeking advice from someone better informed than me. I have a basic road bike for the other half, rear mech got busted up. Its a long cage version on a triple set up. Could I use a long cage MTB mech such as Alivio as a replacement or are they non compatible?

    Probably not as Alivio is an 8 speed system (I think) and you said it was a 9 speed derailleur in the post subject. Someone else may know better though, perhaps an 8 speed derailleur will work with 9 speed shifters.......

    Actually, thinking some more about it, it might work, an 8 speed cassette is the same width as a 9 speed one so it might just work!

    There is definitely a 9 speed alivio available, that's not the issue, I just wonder is an mtb rear mech gonna work on a road set up, think I'll chance it! Cheers for the reply.

    It should work, there's plenty of MTB's running road derailleurs and vice versa.
