Basic and reliable laptop

My old laptop is close to death and I would really like a new one for Christmas. I have an iPad which is great for browsing and social media but I would like a laptop for coding and writing.

I don't have a large budget (say €500 max for everything) and under no illusions that this won't get me a hi-spec model. What I want is a basic laptop, that is very reliable and easy to use. Probably be using Microsoft Office on it as well and perhaps backing up photos.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any brands, models, features, deals etc, that I should look for? I just don't want to buy the cheapest one and then find I can't use it or it breaks after 6 months.

Thanks for your help, I know this question gets asked a load of times and must drive people on here crazy.

Coding? Student? Know a student? 10% off lenovo with campus.ie. Pick up a G505s. Nothing stunning but its good value and sleek enough.

Thanks ED E, had looked at that so will give it further consideration. Thanks for getting back to me.
