Can some1 recommend a Road Bike (€1000)

    Hello all,

I'm an ex-mountain biker due to restricted time.

I have dodgy knees from a gradual squash injury and it has been suggested that I do plenty of cycling by my consultant.

I am fortunately now able to avail of the bike to work scheme and have a budget of €1000

Can someone give me some guidance on a decent bike within this price bracket. I'm 95kg and 6foot1.

I'm living in Celbridge so any suggestions of a decent supplier near by. The nearest shop bikeworx seems a little vague judging by their website.

    Thanks in advance.

    <ignores OP's budget and recommends full carbon with Di2 @ 3'000 euro>

Thought I'd get in there first.

As a Canyon fan I'd propose the following.

    Not "nearby" but great bikes.

Some of the Boardman bikes from Halfords are quite good too.

Drop into Stagg's in Lucan, they've some nice bikes in that bracket that they're trying to shift before the end of the year. (I bought there in recent weeks). Up the road from you too.

New Canyons can only to my knowledge be bought direct from Canyon online, or maybe direct from their store/warehouse in Germany. Still can qualify under the bike to work scheme though I think.

Someone linked the below a few weeks back and i think it is really good value.
Its got 105 11 speed wide ratioa all for under 1K

    2015 Cube Peloton Race

    Marty.

Someone linked it here a while back and then went on to order it...have a search(it shows out of stock but i think he gets them in)

Stagg Cycles in Lucan is pretty close to you, but might also be worth making a trip over to Wheelworx in Liffey Valley.

Stagg Cycles have a Orbea Aqua reduced to €890 with Shimano 105

They also have a fugi sportif for €999, but I think that's pretty steep for Sora components.

I've just looked at Wheelworx and they're missing a trick, not having many bikes in under the €1000 mark, there's only a Trek 1.1 with Claris (most basic) components.

I wouldn't advise buying a bike online as it's your first road bike and you're carrying an injury.
Buy your first road bike from a shop where someone who can confirm the frame size and reach is good for you.

thought there was a general 'What bike should I buy...' thread but I cant find it so hijacking this briefly

    I am looking at getting a Giant Defy 3/4/5 2014. Should I

    a) Buy now
    b) Wait until 2015 when the price drops and buy then
    c) Wait until 2015 and buy a 2015 model

Might have a look in stagg's this evening as well as its not too far from me either

    Or

    d) Don't get a Giant Defy. I had a Defy 4 as a cummuter years ago. They're grand frames, but I honestly think there's much better value out there than some of the Defys.

Also I would have thought now is a as good a time as any if looking for a discount?

Yeah the guys in bikeworx are dead sound and always do a good deal...and know their stuff really well...local lads too which help.

Id get a specialized allez personally, very comfortable bike, they have nice focus bikes for around that price aswell and stock loads of other brands.

Just 2014 Peloton is 10 speed, 2015 is 11 with complete new groupset, looks like Ultegra just is still black. I really like new brakes with 3 pivots. Also Fulcrum 7 wheels. Very interesting for that price.
