Training Contract

    Hi Guys

I was let go by my firm for not getting my exam and Since last 3 weeks, I am applying to all firms with Semi senior/ junior roles but no positive response as yet (I have one year experience). I have decent experience in corporate audit and did a 3 months stint in restructuring as well.

I am very flexible in terms of location and size of the company. Any advice from people who went through this and succeeded in getting a training contract with another firm. I am losing hope at this point and feeling like giving up :(

    Thanks.

All I can say is that dont give up. Keep trying. I have been trying to get a training contract as well but no luck yet. Its frustrating but if you give up then nothing will happen. Good luck to you!!

I'm sorry to hear that, but keep in mind that even in reasonably good times it usually takes a lot longer than 3 weeks to land a new job. So don't be too hard on yourself just yet.

That said, there is an elephant in the room that we need to talk about... passing exams in one of the basic requirements for a trainee and it is hard to expect any manager to recommend that they take you on in the circumstances, at least from a straight up interview situation.

That being the case I would suggest two things:
    - Try to target smaller firms where the one making the decision is the owner, rather that someone who feels their career rests on their recommendations.

    - Network, you need to use your contacts and build new ones. Your best chance is to either meet a partner in some firm that is willing to bet on you or find someone that will give you a recommendation to such a person. I know networking does not come easy to most accounting types, but your career depends on it! You need to be at every dog and pony show where there is a chance to meet potential employers and when you do, don't be afraid to ask for what you want.

And of course finally, get the finger out and pass the bl**dy exams so at least you can tell the next interviewer, you've passed the exams in the mean time.

Many thanks Jim. I really appreciate your advice
