    Hi all

I'm 38 and took voluntary redundancy in the last year from the banking industry. I was 7 years there and before that worked in an accounts office. I don't however have any qualifications and my CV doesn't really scream hire me. At my age and with 2 small kids is it something I really need to be seriously considering? Are employers more interested in qualifications than experience?

    Hi,
It very much depends on your expectations for career growth and the industry you want to persue.
In my opinion, experience is primary, but needs to be supported by a qualification.
Saying that you obviously progressed to the banking job without qualifications so maybe in this case it really depend on the industry.

Thanks. I suppose my struggle is I still don't know what I want to do. I kind of just started in accounts in my 20's and then into the bank before you needed qualifications but if I'm honest with myself Finance/Accounts is not what I want to do and working in the bank in the last few years was awful. I guess I'm just at a crossroads. I'm lucky enough that I don't need a job tomorrow and I am at home with the kids but it knocks your confidence when you don't even make it to interview or even worse when you hear nothing at all.

I guess would depend what you want to do? Anything that would interest you career wise? If you have the opportunity to retrain and dont want to be in current industry I would class it as a positive thing and go out and retrain.

Put it this way. If you were making the hiring decision, and you had two people with similar experience, but only one of them had a diploma/degree or whatever, which one would you choose? Add to that the fact that a lot of jobs require a degree in order to even be considered, it's a bit of a no-brainer for me.

Check out www (dot) sprinboardcourses (dot) ie which has plenty of courses for free if you're on any sort of social welfare, and some which are open to anyone. Beyond that, there are plenty of part-time courses out there to choose from.
