so viewed a car today, yaris...the headlights were left on by your man, noticed they were quiet warm...hardly a good sign? how much would it cost to replace lights? father was saying could be €600 (hardly:confused:)....

also when lifting up the bonnet, was warm also.....any ideas why this would be ?? lovely looking car, so dissapointed with the overheating :( the seller couldnt give us a reason and said he never noticed these before, admitted he hadnt a clue about cars:rolleyes:

Cars engines are warm when there up to temperature. Engine oil is at about 105 degree c and coolant 90 degrees c when the engine is up to operating temperature so it will be warm when you lift the bonnet when it's run. The same with bulbs they give of heat if they've been on for a while the same as a house bulbs. The only issue is the fact he had the car running before you seen it. Your better of to see the car when it's cold to see if it starts from cold well. Also a light bulb is less than 5 euro and a headlight around a 100 quid but changing either won't make the heat go away as that's the way there designed to operate.

The best advice I can give you is bring someone with you who knows even a little about cars when viewing a car.

it wouldn't be unusual for there to be a lot of heat when you open the bonnet on any car, in fact it's quite normal. if there is no "coolant" light on the dash then the yaris temperature is ok. there are warning lights for when it is below or above normal operating temperature.

the headlights being hot to touch when the lights are on would also be perfectly normal, particularly if the car has been parked or a few minutes. yaris headlamps are very prone to weathering and going a frosted yellow kind of colour. you don't need new headlights, it's quite easy to polish the old ones up like new D.I.Y. or a very cheap job to get a garage to do.

obviously if you are concerned, get a professional to look at it, but from what you've said, it sounds perfectly ok.

Lights and engines heat up. Nothing dodgy there. There may be a reason why the car was running prior to you viewing though to hide something noticeable when started from cold.

the headlamps were pretty fogged up...father didnt like that, it seemed as if they werent sealed properly maybe?

Clearly there are issues with your father's knowledge of cars if he thinks warm headlights and bonnets are major problems.

In that case you'll never buy anything!
No used car will be factory perfect, its important to be able to tell the important wrong stuff from the trivial wrong stuff

have a look at this post. it's a corolla, but suffers the same problem as the yaris headlights going a fuzzy yellow. i have no doubt the yaris you viewed probably had worse headlights than this but in 99% of cases they are recoverable with a good buffing.

the repair to these headlights was to buff them with a machine buffer, but if you aren't afraid of a bit of elbow grease it's more than achievable by hand.

Op does your father drive an electric car with led lights as that's the only way you'd get a cold engine and headlights :pac:

As for the lights be fogged up that's condensation but unless it's very severe it wouldn't be a big issue and as I said above you probably looking at 100 quid for a light less for one from a scrap dealer.

Sounds like your father doesn't want you having your own car !

Cloudy lights on a Yaris are due to damage from sun light , they can be cleaned up if not too bad by special buffing, if they passed NCT there acceptable .

nad dont think he really does tbh :P been looking for a car the last year and a half...seen plenty of decent ones but theres always some stupid thing wrong...

all that had to be replaced was the clutch...he was even saying that seemed a bit loose or something....prob just nit picking again

Your dad has a point though, an nct isn't a guarantee of anything. It just proves it was deemed roadworthy 5 months ago.

    Clutch gone? That's not minor!
Has he driven other yariss to compare?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,012 ✭✭✭stop animal cruelty

there was also another prob....the smell of the interior was bad enough....mixture of dog and family with young kids, easy to get rid of?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,522 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Don't even bother, go to the next one.

Honestly, your father knows about as much as you do about cars. For your own sake try to bring someone with mechanical knowledge, and this time tell the seller not to warm the car before you get there.

to buy new from toyota, yes that would be reasonable.

i'd say the poster charged less than €100 to repair those old ones.

Sorry, fixed. Seriously though, if your father thinks that a recently run engine and lights shouldn't be warm he knows nothing about mechanics. You must have some friend who'd know a decent mechanic or knowledgable person?

    looking only for a yaris!

That's a daihatsu sirion. Toyota own 51% of Daihatsu, and the yaris and the sirion is very similar. In fact the Sirion is sold as the Toyota Passo in other markets.

The big advantage of them is that they're not as well known as the yaris and don't command the price premium as a result.
As that one is from a dealer, you have some level of comeback (seller is supposed to be one of the better dealers)

For context, a poster here just spent €2600 on a 01 yaris in very good condition.

I had one cloudy head lamp on my C3 and it failed the nct. My mechanic tried to fix it at a cost of €60. Rained a few day later, condensation returned. Had to have the lamp replaced at a cost of €200.

These things add up. If it feels bad walk away, something else will turn up.

    Best of luck.
