Can anyone please help me. Does the principal of a school have the right to dictate and have the final say on how a parents ass is conducted? (they also have children in the school). There is an issue at the moment where-by they want the AGM overturned due to the fact that a parent elected onto this years committee is unsuitable (in their eyes) This parent is new to the school but it doesn't state in the constitution new member cannot be elected. Instead of speaking to the previous committee of their concerns, they speak to them individually )which i think is unprofessional) ...can anyone please offer advice on this issue.

More info needed. Principals, in general, do not bring hardship on themselves without cause

I completely agree with you but the only information i can give is that this particular parent had a child in another school and moved the child to our school. This is a country school and very small. This parent originally came from another county and moved into the area quite a few years ago and i do believe they are misjudged, hence the reason for whatever reason the principal does not want them on the committee.

Every board of management has a parent representative on it. If parent assoc follow correct route, 2/3 from parent committee speak to principal (which gives both parties a chance to explain grievances further ) and still feel issue is unresolved, then approach parents rep who can bring it to attention of the board.

(don't let this escalate by involving too many. My experience at the min is that some (not all) parent's assoc can become a bit of a witch-hunt and meetings evolve into teacher/principal bashing sessions!)

Are you talking about the PA committee or the Board of Management? If it's a parent elective to the BoM then she has no say. If it's the PA committee then if the parent was elected by the parents then, depending on the constitution of the PA, she also has no say in it. It's a parents' decision and the principal has no business interfering.

I dunno, there might be extenuating circumstances!! Perhaps the Principal mightn't have the 'final say' in who gets kicked out but at the same time the Principal might have to bring some things to light if it brings the BOM/PA/School (Whichever!) into disrepute.

What if the person elected has done/is doing things that go against the Ethos of the school! (Or committed a criminal act!).

(Not that the OP's parent has or anything)

The Principal has no say on the make up of the Parents Committee other than a normal vote at the PA AGM as a parent if the principal is a parent also.

The principal may not agree, but that is as far as it goes.

The principal facilitates the PA but does not control it and cannot force the AGM to be overturned.
