Buying an engagement ring in New York!

Myself and my partner are getting married (the excitement seeing it written down!!) and we are going to elope instead of having the big wedding at home and all the hassle that entails.

I'd love to get married in New York and I was wondering if there were big savings to be made in waiting and buying the rings over there (in particular my engagement ring). My budget will be 3000 euro max (I want to pay for it myself).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, sorry I can't help on the rings as we got ours here but my fiancé and I are eloping and getting married in NYC on the 30th December so if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

We bought our engagement ring in New York in 2008.

it wasn't the intention ( fiancée picked the ring without even seeing a price in the end) but we got serious value. We had to get it valued when we got home for insurance and we had paid approx 30% of their value. Jeweller here also praised the cut etc.

You'll be ok on budget IMO. It's plenty and there is no point getting carried away.

Now when you add in the spending and the hotel....that's another story!

My advise is to stick to the reputable stores and you will be fine. There is value everywhere except Tiffanys.. We got ours in a store on 5th avenue and we were still able haggle a good discount.

    Best of luck

MarieOC - congratulations!! That's very exciting! We were thinking of getting married before Christmas in City Hall (in my head I would have loved Central Park - but the cold would freeze me!). Have lots to organise first so will definitely PM random question!

Rob Thomas - so glad to hear there is value. Friends and work colleagues have talked about Voltaire diamonds in town and even a trip to Antwerp seems popular but don't want to be wasting money if I can get it in NY. Also - it's a big secret and we are telling nobody (including our parents) and we aren't officially engaged or anything - so cant talk to my friends about it. Thank God for Boards!!

In the same boat currently. Got engaged a few weeks back and we are going to NYC in December. Trying to decide if better value buying the real engagement ring in NYC or at home (I used a fake ring because I want my partner to pick her own).

There is a good argument for a getting engaged/buying rings in new York thread.

We've booked a humanist celebrant as I'm still holding out hope for Central Park. If it's too cold we'll do Top of the Rock or somewhere indoors. Definitely braving the cold with the photographer for some pics in Central Park though.

Wow fair play to ye for keeping it secret we've not managed that. Ask away, I've got loads of help from people here and on trip advisor so happy to pass along any help I can give
