Laptop sound not working

Hi , I have been looking at a laptop for a friend who has a problem with her sound. The sound works fine from startup, when you play a song in media player or on YouTube it plays for about 20-30 seconds then just cuts out. And no sound on the laptop can be heard.

The girl is Spanish and she got the laptop from her brother in law who I think builds them, there is no brand on it. I eventually got the drivers for it and updated them, but all that seemed to do was give it maybe 5-10 seconds more before it cuts out again.

I checked the bios and it says American Megatrends. I've never heard of that brand before and I'm finding it difficult to get any info on how to fix the problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Thank you

Edit: it's running an unauthentic version of windows 7 ultimate, wondering would that have something to do with it?

    Anyone?

Very difficult to diagnose, especially on a no brand laptop, possibly home made (how this is possible i dont know...), and on top of that running a potentially dodgey copy of Windows 7.

I think what I would do, is see what is running on startup and see if there is some process gone rogue that is stopping the audio:
    1. Click Start, and Click on Run.
    2. Type: msconfig
    3. Click on startup tab, and take a look and see if there is anything in there that looks amiss, you can untick items in here for the most part, as in an ideal world it should be as clear as possible.
    4. Reboot and see

After that, I would be running checks for viruses/malware. Download Malwarebytes and run that to see if it picks up on anything.

In reality, I suspect that this is some weird driver/hardware issue. But I don't really have anything beyond a hunch to base that on.

Try booting from a USB into a lightweight Linux distro and check the sound. If it's fine then the problem lies with Windows. If it's exactly the same then the problem lies with the sound card.
