Identifying Cause of Problem Carpet Area/Mould in Unused Backroom.

Does anybody know what this problem is?

    Problem%20Area.jpg

It occurred on a patch of carpet in an unused back bedroom. There was a large box here and about two weeks ago I had to remove it as it appeared to have dampness on the bottom. I paced a bin at the spot (which is identified by the not-discoloured circular patch) and today this is what now appears. The carpet around the patch appears to be snowy, A leg of furniture is also discoloured and there is also this fungus object.

All in all it is only a small patch about 2 feet by 2 feet so I want to treat it before it spreads. Not sure if its water damage beneath or just because the area hasn't be used for a long while. Just thought I'd ask before I took up floor boards to check for water damage.

Any help on this is much appreciated.
