Where would people recommend to go for a first time eye test in Dublin. Is Specsavers okay or are you better off going to an independent place.

    Cheers

Go to an independent for your test and then take your prescription to Specsavers.

Specsavers are good for glasses but they are under pressure to get as many tests done in a day as they can (sales targets).

Buy your glasses online. None of the glasses in the British chains here are value. You can get pair of Ray Ban glasses with presciption online from the UK for about €100. But they would cost nearly €200 here

I wish I'd taken this advice.

I have some history of congenital eye defects/ blindness in my family, and so I wanted my test to be as clear as possible, in terms of information about my prescription and physiology. I was no naive! The optician wrote my prescription distractedly, whilst I explained my family history of blindness.

Going to Specsavers is like buying a pair of shoes. Nobody will care about your clinical prescription or daily needs. Specsavers shift glasses (and fast).

I only went to specsavers to avail of their "Get an eye test, get a free pair of glasses free" deal.
Well, when I got there, this deal seemed not to exist. A further enquiry seemed to confirm it: I asked (knowing they had cheaper glasses) "Do you have a more inexpensive range?" The bald answer: "NO".

Well that wasn't true. I paid the minimum I could without making a scene (90 euro) and went away.

I will never go back. I will pay twice as much to go to a clinically-minded optician if necessary, not a wheeler-dealer.

I would have left without paying anything, except I already owed money for they eye-test, and they were offering same-day prescriptions. I'll know better in future. What a waste of time.

To clarify, yeah the front desk staff at Specsavers are sales pushers, but the staff for the tests themselves are qualified optometrists and have should nothing to do with targets and the like, just concentrate on accurate testing.

    This too shall pass.

Do they do free testing at this time of year - I assume the students are on summer holidays at the moment?
    Anyone know? Thanks.
