Lost my iPhone5 at the weekend.. I had previously registered for the "Find my iPhone" services with i Cloud but wen i use this service / app.. a message appears saying "all devices offline".. now I know the phone is turned off or else the sim card taken out as wen I ring it, it goes straight to voicemail every time...

Does the phone have to be connected to the internet for this service to work? If so, its a kind of a pointless service or at least a very limited service dont u think? I was under the impression that it would at least show the last known location of the phone when it was switched on..

I wonder if i contacted my network could tell me the last known location of the phone when it was connected to my network?

    Thanks

yes. I doubt they would tell you tbh. The phone is useless to anyone else thanks to the features added in iOS 7 onwards.

Send Last Location was a feature added in iOS 8, but it has to be enabled and afaik it only works when the battery is low. And yes, the phone has to have an internet connection for Find My iPhone to work. How else can it be expected to send its location to you or Apple? I suppose the phone could constantly sync your frequent location data with Apple’s servers, but after everyone getting their panties in a twist over the location-gate scandal a few years ago, Apple probably aren’t too keen on the idea.

As a means for retrieving a lost phone, no, Find My iPhone isn’t much use at all. Not least because the guards have better things to be doing than breaking down doors looking for stolen iPhones. It’s more about deterrence and protecting the privacy of your data. The Activation Lock aspect of Find My iPhone is far more useful than the tracking part (assuming Apple stay on top of all the workarounds/hacks).

    Won't stop theft unfortunately.
