"failed" root canal? Need 2nd opinion

I recently had root canal treatment for my upper front tooth( I believe it is either number 8 or 9.
However, every time my dentist attempted to finish and seal the tooth I experienced pain and so, my dentist advised me to wait and see if over time the tooth would settle and be able to be sealed. My dentist was quite unsure as to why I was experiencing pain. For example, whenever he placed small bits of paper on the tooth I had sharp pain and almost jumped out of the chair!
After 2 separate failed courses of antibiotics over a few months (erythromycin , then flagyl) , the tooth is still painful. The pain is like a dull ache and very sensitive to touch , however not sensitive to hot or cold.
I also experienced numbness on my top lips which has since subsided. My dentist thinks the only solution is to have it extracted and replaced with a plate.
Basically, I am looking for any insight as to what could possibly be causing the pain, as I am suspicious of my dentist's opinion and general practice.( I wish to switch dentists asap)
As this is one of my front teeth I want to hang on to it if possible.
Apparently , the success rate of these teeth is 90%.

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Op i presume you had a general dentist do this?
If so I would say your next port of call should be an endodontist, whats your location?

The dentist is a B.D.S, whatever that is! I should also mention that I was getting the root canal with my medical card, but I would be willing to pay to see a specialist.

B.D.S is the 5 year bachelors of dental surgery which you do in an nui such as ucc. In trinity they call it B.Dent.sc but it's the same degree.
Entodontist spends another 3 years doing post grad study in the specialist area after doing their b.d.s degree.
Some would do nothing but root canals so they would be better able to assess your situation than a general dentist.
