    Hi,

I cant make my mind up. I have an Amazon voucher for €250 and I am thinking the GPU would make a sensible upgrade, the SSD needs love too but thats for another day.
I cant figure out what to do, get a 290X for close to the voucher amount or throw a ton plus at it and get a GTX 970 ?

    Any help appreciated.

You can get a 290x for nearly 250? You sure it's not a 290? The Gtx 970 is the king for price-performance atm and beats the 290x for a cheaper price among many things.

Ok slight exaggeration when I said the 290x was close to the voucher but I saw this one and was looking at the price off and not paying attention to the currency

Yeah, I'd get the 290x if I were you then. Pretty hard to argue with that price.

Keep in mind that the 290x's power-draw is much higher than the 970's and if you're planning on going for a dual gpu config I'd go with the 970.

the 970's lower heat and lower power has my head turned tbh. Unless anyone can point me different?

Oh by all means, 970 is a perfectly good card, I myself have two of them and wouldn't have gotten them if I thought they weren't attractive. However, in a situation where it's £30 more and you wont be doing sli/crossfire, I can't see much of an improvement, slight performance boost indeed but worth £30? If it is to you, of course, by all means, the 970 is perfect.

That 290x is too expensive. You can get gtx 970's for that money which are a much better buy. The standard 290's are where you get the best price/performance in the high end.

The 970 is easily worth £30 more for the higher performance and lower noise and power consumption although you can get 970's for the same price.

I bought a Gigabyte GTX970 the other day from pixmania.ie for €344 including delivery. That included a 5% off discount code. Worth a look if they are still doing it.

A friend bought an Asus 970 and he's very happy with it. £250.
