Do we have any comeback on a car that has more mileage than advertised

We bought a June 2103 Ford S Max up North this weekend from a Ford Garage. It was advertised with 8,500 miles. When we got the service book the mileage is showing as 15,500 miles.

We should have checked the display on the car before we drove off, but forgot to (first car - novice mistake). Do we have any comeback on this i.e. are we entitled to take the car back and get a full refund, or ask for a partial refund accounting for the mileage difference?

I doubt it's worth the bother tbh. 7000 miles isn't a whole lot.

That was your haggle point, and you missed it.

So the car was advertised with 8.5k but the books show 15.5k.. Did you at no point when you started driving it not look at the speedo cluster?

Definitely both miles and one not kilometers?

5.5k miles is only 8,8k km so I'd seriously doubt that.

It could have been an honest mistake by whoever entered the advert. But it's up to you check car again before handing the dosh over.
Tbh, it's not a big deal even though I understand your disappointment. You could try ringing them up and see if you can get a few extras thrown in.

Sorry I misread the 5.5 instead of 8.5k.

you should have checked the service book before buying as well as the dash. There's no point having a service history if you don't read it. I'd complain and see what they want to do a out it, but it's not as if the car has done mega mileage and been clocked.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

I know the onus was on us to check. We had spoken to the salesman about the advertised low mileage quite a few times and just feel he should have twigged it wasn't actually that low. Chalking it up to lack of experience and will definitely check it the next time before
    handing over the money.

Gonna ask him if he can refund us a few quid to compensate, by playing the repeat business card. Sure can't get anything if I don't ask.

Where do you live out of curiosity? If quite close to the border then I'd go for this idea. If you live anywhere further south it may make no sense with the expense to get there.
Lesson learnt and all that. Hope the car does you well.

First tho to do is bring it to a Ford garage to see what the actual milage. If it's only 15k miles no harm asking for a bit of a discount, if it's had a trim and since you bought in another EU country you'd need to contact the European Consumer centre.

The time for asking for a discount is BEFORE you buy.

Not if what you bought isn't what was advertised.

Yes but the buyer was given ample time to inspect the vehicle and most likely signed something to that effect. 'Errors and omissions excepted' and all that. Its reasonable to expect a buyer to view the car, check the details against the advertisement and establish they are happy with everything. Mileage being an absolutely central part of most peoples bargaining / interest in a car. if the car was advertised as dark navy but when you bought it you realized it was black, do you have come back?

In my opinion, unless the dealer held back information or outright lied, you can't hang them for a potential typo in an ad. One of perhaps 10 they put up or updated that day. I guarantee if you look around the garage or stock at that time, another car has that mileage.

Hard to play the repeat business card when this is the first car you have ever bought anywhere.

you dont buy a car purely on the basis of an ad. its not a pint of milk.

The OP did. Not everyone is knows about cars, some think that buying from a dealer is safe and that they are all trustworthy.

Did the OP pay the advertised price? If not they didn't then clearly both parties showed wanton disregard for the primacy of advertising in the formation of contracts of sale.
