Support the Junior Tour

With news emerging nationally today that the junior tour 2015 faces uncertainty due to financial requirement to run the race, the suggestion arose at the CI AGM to run a sportive to support the Race in the future.

I am not affiliated in any way with the JT or its organisers. The JT race provides the proverbial 'right of passage' for upcoming riders. The potential future loss of such a race is a serious concern.

In our own club in Wexford and even county wide, there is sizeable group of eligible new juniors, currently focussing on the 2015 JT. To eliminate that prospect at such a critical age, would leave a serious goal gap for our junior riders.

I hope that any proposed national event in support of the JT, is supported by all CI members, particularly those holding a race category licence or those whom have previously participated in the JT .

Well done to Alice and Crew for running the successful JT all those years. May there be many more years.

I am happy to play my part to support any proposed event, provide any facility, publicity, date, route, planning, whatever to deliver something of tangible benefit to the JT. I hope that >99% of ireland riders get behind supporting the Junior Tour in 2015.

I think there was a sign-up sheet going around - I didn't get to add my name to it, but would be interested in doing the suggested fundraising sportive for this

If I were a betting man I would say I'm confident this event will be secured for 2015 on the back of a great deal of very positive feedback resulting from what was said at the AGM. I know the organisers have been inundated with messages of support and indeed some financial pledges. With the prospect of one or perhaps even 2 sportives I think the event will go ahead

However that does not mean it will be funded indefinitely and consideration needs to be given as to how we secure this and other events such as the Ras na mBan on an ongoing basis.

Maybe a dedicated sportive is the way forward. If it can build to something approaching the scale of the WW200 I think that would go a long way to providing the funding for a number of international events. That though needs the continued support and goodwill of the cycling community. It really should not be left to a small number of volunteers to do everything, including pleading for funds. We all need to try and help in some way

Now I would note the IVCA do support both the Junior Tour and the Ras na mBan. There are probably a number of reasonably sized clubs out there that do little beyond supporting their own membership. I have no problem at all with clubs looking after their own, but maybe one or two with a bit of surplus cash might want to think about helping out by sponsoring one of these international events. A handful of clubs each throwing a few hundred into the pot may do wonders for some of the events.

As of today Tuesday 4th November, resulting in the support and goodwill of the Irish cycling membership, Junior Tour 2015 will most likely take place as per its requested dates of July 14th to 20th 2015.

Great idea! I reckon that reliability trial could end up being one of the best attended and hardest fought 'races' of the year...

Great stuff and well done to the from the ground up support

Tell me, what's a reliability trial? I immediately thought of myself who very reliably turns up at 9.05 for the 9am spin!

Or another possibility seeing that it's Kildare bound does this have something to do with offering up your chances to St. Brigid?

    Anyone?

Kind of like a grimpeur or a shortened audax event. Designed to test the reliability of bike components. It should be tough, hilly and on awful, awful roads.

And we do this for fun?!

Thanks Cram - wonder what I'll ride?

junior tour trust fund sportive, feb 1 2015 announced.

I should also add in the classic sense of the reliability trial, there is no pre printed route so there is no GPS track to download, no route to revise and prepare. As well as the reliability of the cyclist, it test the reliability of the rider and their navigation skills, depends on the organiser and how cruel they are, you might get a routesheet.

Not sure if they will go hard core on it, most have one stop somewhere along the route. I have to say, I think this is a great idea, I know Audax Ireland had already put one in their calendar for next year.

Statement Junior Tour Trust Fund and Sportives

The organisation of the Junior Tour have been simply overwhelmed by the level of support and suggestions coming from the Irish Cycling Community over the past 10 days.

We have taken on board the promotion of a sportive and the setting up of the Junior Tour Trust Fund.

There are three dates for your diary for fundraising sportives for the Junior Tour Trust.

On December 13th in Munster a sportive will be organised by Will Curtin of Cork Giant store and all entry fees will go to the Junior Tour Trust Fund with further details to be announced by them shortly.

On Sunday February 1st the Junior Tour Organising Committee in conjunction with Irish Air Corps Cycling Association will host a fundraising sportive from Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, Dublin which is also the venue of the popular Morgan Sparrow Memorial Sportive. Further details of routes etc will be announced shortly.

On Saturday 7th February a sportive will be organised by Sean McNicholl of Church Island Cycling in Bellaghy Co. Derry with all entry fees also going to the Junior Tour Trust Fund Full details are available on cyclinguster.com or the events Facebook Page .

The organising committee, based on suggestions from individuals and clubs have been working hard to arrange the necessary administration for the setting up of a secure donation option for those interested. This option can be accessed through the www.juniortourofireland.com or www.irishroadclub.com

Once again we would like to thank everybody at home and abroad, for their support in ensuring that this vitally important event for the youth of Irish Cycling continues for many years to come.

This is all great, and is brilliant to see the cycling clubs and experts come together to find ways to ensure that such an important event as the JT will have a future.

But, and there is always a but, isn't this CI's job? Yet again it seems that the actually running of cycling is left down to certain individuals taking up the batton, of clubs to arrange things and for the normal cyclist to play their part.

Exactly what are the CI doing with all the money they get from the increased membership if they can't keep headline events like the JT going? I agree that the JT plays a massive part in the developement of junior riders but it seems that CI don't share this idea.

We all have to pay a licence each year and so far I fail to see what we get for it. I don't mena directly, I mean the organisation. It seems, admittadly from a distance, that it is the clubs that run the actual events. CI seems little more than a burocratic layer on top.

No it's not CI's job to promote events. Despite that they do contribute to this. A vote was taken at the AGM not to provide further funding (and if it had gone the other way I am sure a number of other events would have come up with equally worthy pleas)

Have a look at the accounts already linked in the AGM thread

CI's job is to cater for all disciplines, including leisure. They undertook a survey of when it was pretty clear that the support of this sort of stuff was not a major priority across the whole membership (and racing members make up maybe 15% of the total). This initiative was proposed at the AGM and received extensive support there. To me this is definitely the way forward for events of this nature

Here's a link to the first of the sportives to help the Junior Tour. There's a draw for a 3,000 yoyo Giant included in entry fee,

    Hi Folks,

Anyone else from Boards riding on Saturday? Also, which was the first year of the Junior Tour and anyone have promo pics? I thought it was 1977, but I think now I may be wrong - was going to ride an appropriate vintage bike to suit the year!

You've got a different bike for every year?

Thought I was bad with my fleet of 8/9:P

Hmmm, that came out wrong! I'm trying to keep it to one type of bike per decade... with some exceptions and projects on the way.

I've the 80's well and truly covered. Can't make this weekend but will show my support at one of the other events. That Giant would look lovely in your collection Brendan.:p
