Im normally a fairly upbeat person but this is the second year when the clocks went back that I started feeling a bit down. Im not looking for medical advice as Im aware that is against charter. Nor do I want this moved to PI. Im moreso wondering if its a fairly common thing when the dark nights start coming at 5pm and earlier.

Buy a SAD lamp ... They seem to work

Unless 6 months down under is an option

I like Winter. Hot drinks, strong trappist beer or some red wine with the rain and wind lashing against the windows is a great thing*

*Winter may not be as enjoyable on weekdays.

I hate the short days, getting up and coming home in the dark, even moreso when the weather is crap like today.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 424 ✭✭Chunners

I prefer the early nights to be honest, honestly hate it in the summer when it doesn't get dark until 10pm, it just makes it feel like the day is dragging

SAD lamps are ridiculously expensive, just go to a pet shop and buy a UV strip light and the fixture for max €45 (15 for the strip light and 30 for the fixture) and use that instead. They are what you need to keep exotic pets like bearded dragons so if they work for them as an acceptable source of UVA and UVB that mimics what they would be experiences in Australian sunlight they will work for you. No idea why people would pay 100's of quid for a SAD lamp when there is a perfectly functional cheap option available

Has anyone tried using a vitamin D supplement at this time of year? It's supposed to work wonders.

Try Egg and Mustard Sambo's, heard they work wonders !

I got a Lumie wake up light (Lumie 250) and I can't recommend it enough...
I'm bounding out of bed in the morning as opposed to dragging myself out like a gremlin!

I look forward to the winter, my eyes are too sensitive to light, feel like I spend all summer squinting, its such a relief to be in the dark. Can be a bit disorienting though if you leave in the dark, come home in the dark and are inside all day.

I did :D cos I hate too much light and heat and humidity and the sun being around at stupid times of the morning, does my head in.

They have this lumie in boots for a lot cheaper than anywhere else. http://www.boots.ie/en/Lumie-Bodyclock-Active-250_1133457/

Dunno if the price is a misprint or what, but I bought one and it was delivered last week grand! I love it...makes dark mornings a lot easier!

try living in estonia where the summers are short, winters are long and the sun barely gets above the horizon for a few hours a day in winter months

Start running, going for a run on a nice crisp winter evening is class and should cheer you up.

Thanks a mil for posting that, bought it straight away! I was going to wait awhile because 80-90 euro seemed a bit steep.

I hate being dragged out of sleep by an alarm, especially when it's dark out so this will be great to have!

Shove your head in a light box, some job.

Winter sucks a bit. Hate when it dips into the mid teens. Currently 22C, but there is a bit of a breeze so it feels colder :p

Can't beat a long walk/run on a clear winters morning to clear the head, all the best TV shows run during autumn/winter, pubs always seem better in winter, and the whole month of December is spent eating and drinking well.what's not to like

I'd hate having warm weather all year, Christmas without icy cold frosty mornings such wouldn't be the same.

Yeah I suffer from SAD too. :( It's not too bad when I go home at the weekends when there's a fire burning and I'm surrounded by my family. But being stuck in the apartment alone during the week is terrible. I run at lunch time when it's bright out, get up a bit earlier and keep myself occupied in the evening and tend to hike a good bit over the winter. It definitely helps A LOT!

    Yeah it sucks :p

ah no, it does get colder through Dec to feb but would rarely fall under 7-8c so never any chance of frost or snow. I mostly go back to Ireland for Christmas so get my fill then.

However, you can go skiing about an hour from where I live so that's pretty cool.

Hot one's are about the only upside I can think of for the long drawn-out winter months!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

Lovely hot drinks to warm yourself
Cold air in the morning to exercise in/invigorate yourself
Nice big coats to warm yourself up
    Nice warm food
    Nearly christmas time
    Frost
    Rain
Lovely dark mornings, don't get blinded by fecking sunlight all the time
    Lack of humidity
    Good tv

    Cloud493 loves the winter

It's was actually so nice in Amsterdam today, 10degrees, there's a thick fog around all day that never lifted, cold but no wind, some decorations up in town already, perfect :)

this must have been a misprint, price is now 132.99 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭mickstupp

I got a similar thing, obviously lower quality but still, from Aldi last week. Think it was 25 or 30. I've been using it a week now and quite like it. It has made waking up in the mornings less traumatic. Waking up in soft light I feel like it's morning and don't mind getting up so much. Worth a shot. Sempre Sunrise Alarm Clock was the name.

Ha! I personally know at least 3 people who bought it for the low price.

I don't mind winter, not a fan of the early dark evenings but I love Christmas....though driving in icy conditions can be very stressful. Speaking of which I'm guessing not too many of those praying for snow in the Weather Forum have to drive to work on crappy country back roads!! :(

I think because we had such a great summer/autumn the sudden winter is more depressing than usual. I'd strongly suggest getting one of those lights OP, they really help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Woshy

I also prefer winter - because I'm a lazy, indoor type of person. I've been loving the bad weather recently and being cosy inside.

I lived abroad for a few years and had a few summer Christmases. It just wasn't the same. I hated it! You really need Christmas to break up the winter period. Winter without having a Christmas break in the middle really dragged on. Countries in the southern hemisphere should really have a winter solstice holidays (which is what Christmas originally was) or something.

I'm missing the crisp cold weather already, looking forward to it when I come home for Christmas. This country has no seasons, it's messing with my head a bit the weathers the same as it was in August.

Not me, Winter seems to suit my personality. I'd hibernate for the Summer if I could.
