I had brought these out to show my kids today, they were left to me by my grandfather and they were my great grandfather's. As far as my knowledge goes the air efficiency award is quite rare while the other two are quite common. Two things I am wondering are can I find out anymore about my great grandfather by his details as engraved on the outside of the medal and just how rare is the king george air efficiency award? worth insuring? its kept in my safe at present but I would consider lending to a museum.

According to Medal Year Book, the AE medal was awarded for ten years efficient service in the auxiliary and Volunteer Air forces.It does not list the numbers awarded but gives value of £100-£120 (2009 prices) you could add approx 20% to that today.

Before you lend to a museum make sure you have a watertight loan agreement and that the medals will be displayed.
