Are Sky+ HD boxes locked to a specific viewing card?

Sky have let me exit my contract early following the recent change requiring HD to view box sets. As a result I find myself with a 5 month old STB I no longer need. I've been given conflicting opinions as to whether these boxes are locked to the viewing card supplied so before I try to sell or dispose of it can anyone confirm if this is the case. I can't get my hands on another viewing card to try it out. Thanks

I don,t know if your box is locked or not but I have the sky HD box and it crashed on me a while back so I took out an old Sky plus box and put my card into that and it worked. I got my sky HD box working again thankfully as had no remote for the old box.
My point is that old box was not locked and had not been used with my card before so unless they have changed that in the last 8 or so years I think it should work with another Sky card. Try and get a lend of someones elses card and try it out maybe bring the box to there house or there card to the box.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I think they are locked to your card or you could just go around stealing cards.A quick phone call to SKY would unlock the card/box.Only thing is I don't think you own the SKY box until you have had SKY for year.

Things have changed a lot in the last 8 or so years.

Sure they're even fitting water meters in this country now :pac:

When you subscribe to Sky in order to view premium channels your Viewing Card must be paired to your Sky box.

When ever you switch Sky box you must repair your viewing card to your new Sky box.

If your selling your box the person who buys it will do this with their viewing card. Your not allowed to sell your viewing card.

Non premium content does not require the viewing card to be paired to the Sky box, merely inserted to allow decryption.

The box is given to you straight away otherwise sky would have asked for it back.

Yes, you're correct about that. When I was having the final discussion with the Sky agent I asked her if, in view of them allowing me exit early, they wanted the equipment back and she said it was mine to do what I liked with. Her exact words were "you can paint it pink if you want to" - we didn't seem to part on the happiest of terms

I have bought a 2nd hand had box from adverts. When you sell it the buyer can ring sky after installing to get their card paired to the box

They allow you to keep it in the hope you resubscribe. All those repeats on the EPG why wouldn't you.
