Would welcome views on best locations in the south of Spain or Portugal for golf as a couple this November. We like nice food and wine as well. Don't like too busy courses or not in good condition. Thanks.

I like the the Lisbon area for the mix of good golf and city sophistication. You generally get what you pay for as regards golf, so if it looks cheap - it probably is. Check out Estoril and Caiscais for good courses and some good deals. The Algarve is better known and has some great courses but is a bit too one dimensional for my taste, even though the weather is more reliable than Lisbon.

Overall I prefer Portugal to southern Spain, mainly because it is less over-run with Brits, Russians and the like.

I would be a Spain man myself, having lived there for many years.
Not Costa del Sol though. Murcia is one of my favourite spots and it is an area where mostly Spanish people holiday.
Some great courses, such as Roda Golf and La Manga. Accommodation in those golf courses in November would be very reasonable too. I would prefer to stay in Roda, being newer and more central for touring the area.
Very accessible to terrific wine routes such as Jumilla. You are also a stone throw from Almeria also where the wine continues and you will find some fantastic culture too.

Tenerife...Great courses and always guaranteed good weather

I’ve holidayed in both Spain and Portugal but only played golf in Spain. Pricewise, Portugal appears to be a little dearer, course quality is probably a bit better but sunny weather is less guaranteed than in Spain.

For the last 6 years, I been on 4-5 day golf outings with friends to the Murcia / Alicante areas (they are quite close if you have a car), stayed in an apartment and played in about 10 different courses. Best courses we played were Las Colinas, La Finca (€95 for the two including buggy – twilight rates) and Hacienda Requelme (around €35 excluding buggy). We also liked El Valle. Buggies are a must on longer courses such as Las Colinas and La Finca. Shorter courses than these can be found nearer the coast, e.g. Roda. These are OK but we preferred the longer courses a bit more inland.

I would advise booking before you go – there are lots of websites as rates seem to be a little dearer when you get there.

Have stayed in Hotels in Portugal, in Cascais (Lisbon area) and Vilamoura (Algarve) – both were very popular with golfers and both are ideal locations for walking about, meals out, etc. Looking at prices in the hotel (just over a week ago) and advertised by agencies in Vilamoura, prices ranged from about €100 to €60, excluding buggy – hotel gave a discount of about 20%.
