I will be moving to Ireland in the new year, is it cheaper to buy import (something like a Ford Fiesta, 2-4 years old or buy in Ireland?

    Thanks

If you are going to go to the relative hassle of importing, buy a top spec in the UK or something that is hard to find here. I suppose, make an 'investment' if that is the right word to use? Beyond that, its not worth it from a financial or personal time standpoint, in my opinion anyway.

Remember to budget for vrt costs, to get registered here for minimal cost you have to own car for min 12 months I think.

What country are you moving to Ireland from?

If you already own the car and can prove you were resident in the UK for the last 6 months with bank statements, bills etc you won't need to pay VRT.

Most cars will be cheaper in the UK. You should look at motortax.ie to see what the price of motor tax is, cars from 2008 onwards are taxed based on emissions, cars before this are taxed based on engine size. The current "desirable" cars in Ireland are low emissions diesel based cars.
