Importing american muscle cars

    Hi All,

I have been a lover of american muscle cars for over 10 years now and i am finally thinking of making a purchase of either a dodge challenger or ford mustang aged between 2009 to 2014, i was wondering has anyone ever imported one from the states or the continent and how much the VRT cost on these cars to register in Ireland, Ive contacted the VRT to find out what the open market selling price(OMSP) is as the cost of the VRT IS 36% of the (OMSP) but was unable to get a cost as i was told that the car had to be here in Ireland before the revenue could make an evaluation of what the car is worth. I hope someone here can give me some information as regards the cost of the car and the VRT?

    thanks,

    pwtk

    VRT (36%) + VAT (23% of total inc. shipping) + Duty (10%).

Bend over, or buy in Europe I reckon.

Plus €2350 a year tax, may aswell burn your money lol.

Import a classic, €200 vrt and €56 plus no nct on a pre 1980 car.

There's usually a few mustangs, challengers pop up for sale, Best off checking the american car forums here in ireland or up the north as you'll be saving yourself on money that way! :)

Thanks for the replies guys, i seen a few in Germany thats reasonable in cost but will the revenue charge the VRT accordingly to the price id pay for the car in Germany or will they try to screw me with their own open market selling price??

    Thanks,

    Thanks,

    OMSP I'm afraid.

But you can appeal it if you think you paid too much! You have to pay it first then appeal it i think..

Thanks Daaryl, I like to know how they would go about estimating an (OMSP) for such a car as there wouldnt be many of them in the country.

For example.. With the nissan skyline they were 720 i think before they took them off the vrt calculator due to loads of people bringing them in from japan.. Same with the nissan silvia and toyota chaser.. To vrt a skyline now it's 1700+ which is a joke to be fair.. You could be looking up to 5-6k+

To be honest if was that 5-6k i wouldn't mind i jump at that because back in 09 i brought a 07 audi A4 s-line in from england and the VRT was 5k so i definitely buy if it was that.. i was thinking at 36% they be looking at 10k plus

I haven't done it but someone living close to Killiney Dart station did it because there was a D reg Mustang parked on the road for the best part of a year.
Those lovely double white stripes. Makes a welcome change from the usual top-end marques.

    True
But are you ok with €2350 pa motor tax ??

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Have you driven one? For a long period of time? Spent a good deal of time States side and on the various rallies there. They are no where near European trim, spec or comfort level.

I'm all for following the dream and if you don't mind the duty, tax and fuel go for it. If it was me though, I'd probably be aiming for a classic. Best of both worlds, you have your dream but you are saving a bundle, especially if its only for summer use. There is a reason you don't see many of them in Ireland, let alone Europe. They are certainly not a drivers car. Try one in a corner on HWY1 in California

OP If your considering upto 2014, would you not wait until the new EU spec Mustang is launched in 2015. It will be RHD have independent rear suspension, might be a better overall option instead of going for a LHD grey import.

I think right hand drive Mustangs are sold in the UK so that might also be an option.

starting price for a standard 2.3ltr ecoboost is been estimated at €45000 serious money small engine, but looking at challengers, camaro and mustangs in uk and germany may definitely be a better option for me.

These guys reckon the four cylinder might be a better fit than the V6. That's saying something coming from Americans reviewing a muscle car.

Obviously the V8 would be best but the ecoboost doesn't sound too bad

Te V6 is entry level, ecoboost woul actually sit above it and then you have the full fat V8

A gt86 is 4/5k less, makes the mustang look very keenly priced :)

Presuming the rumoured 45k price for the 2.3 materialised.
