recently i met two people from iceland. they were just after completing my home course, bearna golf club, and i asked how they got on. they quite liked it but said that they found it quite easy. tbh this is not something i hear people say too often about bearna! i usually find that if you can play bearna well that you can play well almost anywhere.

anyway, we talked some more. i asked them about golf courses in iceland. we compared fees and we found out both were about the same (roughly €800). they then told me that their home course had about 4000 members...i was stunned!! ive never heard of a course with this many members. does anyone know if this is true, or was there something lost in translation?

It's bright there for nearly 20 hours during the summer so they would have loads of tee times.

Iceland isnt that much colder than Ireland

But that is coming from a lightweight that put clubs away last weekend and that is the latest in the year I have ever played

Actually from what I remember of Iceland, it was very cold with a wind that blew through you. As well, while not in the southern locales, there was always the possibility of a polar bear joining in ones excursions.

If you need a few facts to backup the claim, as a country, Iceland has the biggest percentage participation to head of population in the world. It also has the largest number of golf courses to head of population, approximately 60 courses for a population of 330,000.

There are many 9 hole courses. Whilst some of the designs are fairly simple, the locations of a lot of these courses are nothing short of spectacular.

Edwin Roald is the best known Icelandic course architect. A fine and talented fellow he is too.
