I need to respray my bmx frame. I have a matt orange I'm painting it. I sprayed it already that colour but it kept getting chipped.
Firstly, do I need to sand down the old paint with a sanding pad?
And secondly, can I use a lacquer on the matt paint?

If you want a matt finish most lacquers will give you a gloss finish over it so you might be better off with a gloss paint or if you want you can get a matt lacquer just make sure your paint and lacquer are compatible or you will get cracks.
If you can help it don't strip down to the metal you want to keep as much as the primer as you can so just enough sanding to give a smooth finish and a good bite for the next coat.

Ok thanks, so sand the current coat to a smooth finish, then prime and sand again and then do a coat of paint and an appropriate finish?

if u larquar over matt paint it will be shiny and therefore not matt, best thing to use is a 2-pac paint in whatever matt color u want and dont larquar over it ,it will be very durable as its a 2 part paint (hardener + base coat),cost would be around 25 euro per 1/2 litre which will be plenty for spraying a frame

I'm not really too pushed about keeping the matt finish, id rather it was more protected than looking a certain way!

By the way 250ml or 1/4 of litre will be plenty for a bmx frame around 15 euro and same in clear coat
