bought wrong bike!

    Hi all,

Relatively new to the forum so take it easy on me!
As the title suggests I bought a trek hybrid bike on the bike to work scheme about 3 or 4 months ago.

Main reason for buying was to do a bit of cycling at weekend and also I had been roped into doing adventure race.
I assumed I would do the race, hate every minute of it and never do another one.

As it happened I really enjoyed it and am now planning to do more. My bike sections were strong enough and I finished respectably for my first race (100 out of 200).

I noticed that a lot of competitors had road bikes and they are obviously more suited to these events. Wish now I had bought a road bike.

Question is should I bring bike back to shop and ask them what can they do on a trade in, or sell privately and buy one seperate to this. Maybe second hand.

Can't justify a huge budget as have only got this and Christmas is fast approaching! But would be willing to put a few hundred to it.

    Thanks
    Chris.

I doubt they'll give you much for it if you're not spending much... adverts.ie is probably your best bet. YOu might get 50% of what you paid. biketowork scheme has the market low

    Dont sell it.
You need it to get to work/shops/pub etc. Everyone needs one bike that can be left locked outside the above mentioned places and one bike that would never be left out of sight.
This bike would be for your adventure races or long weekend cycles.

I know its a lot of money spent on bikes in a short period of time but they will last forever so look at it as a long term investment.

I was thinking that, particularly if I can't get much for it. Just don't know if I can justify having 2 bikes.
Bikes on adverts and donedeal seem to hang around for a while. Btw scheme doesn't encourage 2nd hand sales. If was only getting couple hundred probably wouldn't bother.

Looking at a boardman bike online in halfords for ~600. Might stretch to that kinda money.

See what local bike shop has first though. Prefer to give him my business (again!)

This time next year you'll be wondering how you can justify having 3 bikes ☺

Was in a similarish position to you in having got a Grant Rapid 3 hybrid through BTW in autumn last year - got into solo spins - joined a club - and arrived at the same dilemma. Although the BTW has depressed the second hand market it can work in your favour as there is great value in second hand road bikes out there especially as the weather takes a downturn. This means you can pick an excellent quality road bike with minimal wear and tear to use on longer touring spins and keep your hybrid for day to day use.

I'd fine it hard to justify not having at least 3 bikes.

Oh it's easy - one's a hybrid and doesn't count. 2 are only used whenever I'm in the country in which they are stored, so they really don't count either.

A couple are dedicated to TTs - not real bikes at all.

    OK, 5 to go ....

I had spare pedals lying around recently. Just got myself a frame to attach them to.

Going by that logic, I've 3 more bikes to go so! :(

You're right - frames don't count. Anyone got any ideas for a pursuit frame?

Ok seems to be a common theme to get a new bike and keep other one!

Anyone reccomend a decent bike for absolutely no more than 600. Looking on adverts and dont see anything standing out.

Be patient, adverts and done deal, but be ready to pounce when quality/ value for money pops up in your size.

But you have to be sure of what kind of new bike you need first. 'Road Bikes' may look similar to newbies but you might get a new bike and after a while find out that it's not the ideal one for you either.
For example, there's a new genre of 'gravel bikes' emerging that might suit you adventure racing. They are a bit like cyclo cross bikes and good for urban commuting, and the open road also. But not good for road racing. So, maybe cycle the hybred for a while and mull things over.

I am an impulsive kinda guy. Don't do mulling over lol. Watching dd and adverts with interest.

Don't know a huge amount of makes so is a bit awkward.

What model Trek is it, if you want to look for info on bikes check out http://www.thebikelist.co.uk/, this compares spec and value between different makes of bikes.

I bought a hybrid 3 months ago, a Giant Escape 0. I listened to the guys in the bike shops but in the end that website made my mind up and have to say it's a great bike for the money. Good Luck in your hunt.
