You lucky PC people will finally be able to play one of the best strategy games released in years, it was confirmed the game will be getting a PC release by Sega. It's hard to describe how the game plays but I've heard a lot of people compare it to jagged alliance.

That is fantastic news. It's a brilliant game, which i never managed to finish. Will definitely pick this up.

Nice to see some back catalogue games finally making it to the pc.

This was one of those "Wait, what!" moments for me. Loved VC (reason I bought my PS3) and nice to see it release on the PC so more people can enjoy it.

Would like to think it might do well and encourage Sega to bring 2 and possibly translate 3 as well (now thats a big stretch) but, alas, its coming to PC so no copies sold until its €2 in a Steam sale

Literally bought this for the PS3 three weeks ago, saaaaaaaaaake :p

I'm not big into my JRPGs but from what I've heard this is fantastic alright.

Well this is more strategy game than JRPG really although it does have a very anime aesthetic. Some people don't like the writing either but I think those people are crazy. Sure it has a very saturday morning cartoon feel but it should be commended for tackling issues like the concentration camps, nuclear weapons and the loss people feel during war yet still keeping that tone.

The game is good but has several issues that hold it back.

Firstly while the game tackles mature themes the problem is the dialogue is for children and its hard to take seriously, this is an issue I have in general with Japanese made games. Of course this is just personal preference.

Secondly and more importantly the A.I is poor. Enemy soliders will frequently run back and forth in front of your troops without firing for no discernable reason other than to get themselves killed.

But the biggest problem is that its too scripted. Its basically trial and error. If the enemy beats you, its goings to make the exact same moves the next time so you know what to expect and how to counter it.

Still its a good game but its hard to overlook the flaws.

I don't really have a problem with those two things you mentioned. Now the AI is poor but it's also predictable. If it was unpredictable it would get frustrating. It would be nice if they didn't act so stupid sometimes but it hardly ruins the game.

As for trial and error, yes there can be a bit of that but I see it more like solving a puzzle than something like the usual RTS.

So valid criticisms but they're stuff people who play a lot of japanese SRPG games would be used to and accept and they aren't really game breakers.

Well its up on Steam for €18 (10% off right now). Release is the 11th of November, and it includes all the DLC that was released for the original PS3 version.

Nice, the DLC was pretty good from what I remember.

1080p (and higher) and 60 FPS confirmed

    OS: Windows 7
Processor: Intel Core2 Duo @ 2.8GHz (or equivalent)
    Memory: 2 GB RAM
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280 (or equivalent)
Hard Drive: 25 GB available space

If it's true it looks like a good port.

Generally speaking SEGA ports have always been good ports.

I'll probably wait a while to pick it up, with Warlords of Draenor and Dragon Age 3 out this month, but it's a definite buy for me.

A few problems with the portover but generally reviews are very good.

Did not expect to see it do so well considering it only sold modestly on PS3. Glad to see it get the attention it deserves. It's a long shot but maybe we might see a PC conversion of the second game which is geared more towards multiplayer and finally an english translation of the third title.

Aye, looks like they use the same engine too so it could certainly happen. The only issue would be the assets, not sure how well they'd really scale from the PSP version. Better to have it than not though!

I'm not sure it's the same engine but the specs of the PSP means converting games to PC is very easy especially if they kept the development source. The models and graphics wouldn't scale that well on PC, they are noticably low detail on PSP but even being able to play VC3 would be worth it and I never really go to play VC2 multiplayer since it was local linked multiplayer.

I can't find anything really official but the wiki entries all indicate the series were built on SEGA own CANVAS engine. As for PSP development, I'm pretty sure you're the first person I've ever seen to use the term in conjunction with the word easy. :P

PC Gamer have a nice analysis of the PC port from Durante here, by the way.

Is this just another JRPG? I've seen the name spoken of in highly positive terms, but JRPG's bore me to tears, so I don't know if I should be giving this more of a look or not :)

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 17,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭cherryghost

No it's kind of more of an Action strategy game. I highly recommend it. It runs on anything incredibly well and its a breath of fresh air for JRPG/strat fans on PC.

I played it on the PS3 but also got it on PC. It feels and plays so much better.

It is a JRPG stratgy game. If you really dont like them stay clear. There are good ones though like this and persona.

couple of things i didnt like about it

the whole chapter thing was/is a joke - click here to start inane dialogue - dialogue ends, click here for more inane dialogue - dialogue ends, click here for even more.. then twenty clicks later you get to a mission briefing.

It's not that the story is terrible, it's really not. It's the fact that it's broken up needlessly by chapters instead of a fluid chapter that plays through the scenes up until you get a mission.

The voice acting is sometimes great and sometimes awful, in the same way that every JRPG which is voiced is. Personally i found it to be a bit too childish dealing with a fantasy version of europe at war. Then it comes back around to dealing with some incredibly adult/mature themes in the same way.

The combat itself is quite fun, similar to any TBS, even XCOM with the soldier classes and some really awesome soldier specialities oh, and a Tank!

I'd been halfassedly looking for this game on the PS3 for ages since i'd heard about it and never found it anywhere bar online for ridiculous prices, the PC version is decent enough for a port and the controls are fairly okay too. But i'm glad i only paid 20 quid for it.

I'd say if you love JRPG's and dont mind the stuff i've mentioned above you should grab it or wait for a sale. Even if you dont like JRPG's the TBS element is worth playing at least once or twice

I didn't really mind the whole book aspect of the storytelling. Not to spoil anything but at the end you realise why it's presented like a historical account book and was a nice little touch during the fantastic ending.

I actually think the writing is great. Sure it can be childish but it also deals with very mature themes. It takes a lot of talent to do something lie that and not be jarring. It's kind of like the best Pixar stuff in that regard. How many other games touch on something like the Final Solution?

Also anyone bored to tears by JRPGs should play some good ones like Persona or Grandia, there's far better than Final Fantasy which can be very basic. VC is definitely more strategy game than jrpg though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,761 ✭✭✭✭degrassinoel

Yeah the whole book thing i got, but it's fragmented so much by the 'Click' to see the next 25 seconds of this and that, then another 5 or 6 of those to get to the part where you actually do something. I know that's pretty petty of me to dislike the game for, but it was like trying to eat your favourite meal with the hiccups. You can still do it, it's just not as enjoyable.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,408 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Well it's not to everyone's tastes, it's kind of visual novel in a way, something I'd be more used to because of the weird jrpgs I play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,274 ✭✭✭de5p0i1er

I managed to get 100% on the PS3 after several playthroughs I had alot of fun playing that game I don't know if I want to buy it again but it is pretty tempting to try it all over again.

A mid mission save would be nice. Getting half way through a mission and missing something that messes your whole plan is a pain. There are a few troop placements/mines etc hidden in places that make it very trial and error too.

Not sure on PC but on the PS3 there is a save option during the mission. It's in a sub menu of the pause screen (system options I think) so try there
