Update the old bike or get a new one?

    Background:
Currently I'm riding few years old Planet-X Superlight Team kitted with full 105 and Mavic Aksiums, theres nothing particularly wrong with this ride but, well you guys know.

So, the question is: should I update this bike with bit of new kit or sell it and look for a new one for 2015?

    Option 1: update
    - New better wheels to replace Aksiums
    - New compact crankset to replace current 52/39t
    - New cables, brake pads, bartape, etc bits and pieces with thorough overhaul, cleaning and adjusting
    - Sell the swappable bits that are worth something (wheels & cranks)

    Current ride:

    Option 2: new bike
    - Looking for full carbon with new 105 or even Ultegra
    - Decent wheels
    - Budget ~1200-1500€ from my own pocket + funds from selling old bike

Which way would you go? Would my projected budget give something considerably better than what I'm currently riding in order to justify the spend?

I'd give me the old bike and give up cycling, it's really over rated.

Keep the old bike as is and buy a new one with a compact.
    N+1 and all that ....

I would say nothing to the misses and get a new bike delivered to work

Get a new bike (2014 model deals in shops) then upgrade the new one and pass on these to the old frame.
clean-up and sell the original components (or buy a frameset to make a 3rd bike...)

    Now I am confused.

I had already sort of made the choice of going with the option 2 and just needed someone to back me up on this, now I'm considering options 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Upgrade / refurb the current one (try to pickup a 2nd hand compact crankset) and keep as your winter / wet weather bike.
Spend the winter shopping for the new "good bike".
