    Hi just looking for advice,building a workshop beside my house was hoping to set up a small retail business what do I have to do to make it legal.

    First thing is to make sure you have planning permission for the retail unit. Then register for income tax. Depending on the type of business (b2b or public) or projected turnover you can decide whether to register for vat or not. If you are spending a lot on the workshop it may be worth your while registering for vat.

    Yes a shed in a private house isn't liable to rates but a retail unit would be subject to local authority rates
