I'm looking to weld a high carbon steel piece to a mild steel piece. What is the best rod to use?

I was thinking of using some 7018 rods due to the two separate metals.

Have you tried your regular rods, sometimes they work, sometimes not?

If not, what you need are called disimiliar rods,
    https://www.weldequip.com/312-dissimilar-electrodes.htm

Found a uk link, but should be available here too

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

May need to pre heat it with gas if you have it to.

Dis-similar rods as said above, think they could be something like 29/9 as a code or something, not sure if 7018's are the same idea, but read lately that they are an easier rod to weld on te vertical with as the weld pool solidifys quicker than a 6013 so not blobs dropping off

Was trying to avoid that if I could. Sometimes ya have to preheat then weld and then heat again

A 29/9 rod should sort you out. Bear in mind that they're a bit dearer than the normal mild steel rods.

Look out for the slag with some of those rods, it tends to fly off so eyes are vulnerable

Yeah they are €1.50 a rod but trying to avoid them if i can as I'll need around 150 rods or so for the job. Ya know yourself :o

Especially any rod with a high Chromium content, or hard facing. Just as the bead cools, and you open the mask to see how it looks, slag flies off with a "ping"
    Eyes are hard replaced.............

You pranged your MOWAG, acting the maggot, and have to have it fixed before the CO finds out?

    Ah, sure, who would know?

Bit like the old dodge of running a "bead" of chewing gum "weld" on an awkward place. Lick of paint, and you'd never know........

Are ya sure. Be far handier to MIG it but was told the weld wouldn't hold to the high tensile steel too well.

That's what I use to weld blades on loader buckets if you are afraid drill and fit with high tensile bolts
