I heard a people say you only know if your engine is any good on a hot day in a field with a mower, so when buying privately or from a dealer what simple engine tests can be carried out, 6 to 7k price range ? DB 1394, case, 885 international etc

Make sure engine is cold when you arrive, then see how easily it starts.
Check for blow back at dipstick. (some is normal on an old machine )
Check for smoke from breather pipe.
    Colour of smoke from exhaust.
    Listen for knocking noises.
    Check for signs of leaks.
    Check for oil/water mixing.
Do some kind of driving test, no harm listening for gear box issues as well.

But as said nothing like mowing to test a machine for cooling issues.
